After growing up in Istanbul, I did my Bachelor and Master at Heidelberg University in Germany. Here, I became interested in circuit dynamics and information flow between brain regions. I then completed my PhD at the Center for Brain Research in Vienna, working on hippocampal gamma oscillations and the coolest interneurons – neurogliaform cells. Now, I am a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Adam Carter’s lab at New York University, studying the organization of thalamo-cortical circuits. My project focuses on the inhibitory pathway between frontal cortex and higher-order thalamus.
Outside of work, I like petting cats and dogs; meeting strangers and talking about philosophy with them – Camus and Spinoza are my general favorites; reading books (novels – mainly existential novels); dancing any type of dance, currently I’m enjoying what New York has to offer – the jazz music and the swing dance; being a flaneur and exploring the city walking and travelling. My most recent travel journey is here.
